POSITION SUMMARY

The Controller plans, directs, and oversees the company’s day to day accounting, payroll, and finance activities. The Controller also provides direction, education, and support for the Finance, and other DNWest’s departments. This individual is responsible for developing and maintaining the organization’s accounting functions to ensure that financial data is accurate, complete, and in compliance. Specific areas of responsibility include ensuring the integrity of the general ledger, financial statements, cost reporting, banking and payroll.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for all accounting functional areas, including general ledger accounting, budget assistance, cash management and banking, financial reporting, cost reporting, payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable.
  • Payment processing when using ACH, wire or Bill.
  • Develops accounting policies to comply with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), state and federal regulations.
  • Review and process employee expense reports
  • Ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting through preparation of periodic and yearly draft financial statements and internal auditing.
  • Assists in analysis of the financial results and conditions of the organization.
  • Review of 990 tax return and other regulatory reports.
  • Responsible for a timely, efficient and accurate closing process.
  • Supports Budget process and review, including payroll, cost report, and integration with Intacct..
  • Interfaces with banks and other lenders for treasury efforts.
  • Monitors daily cash activity by the reviewing of deposits and expenditures and utilizing the positive pay system.
  • Review and approve all general journal entries.
  • Review and post all payroll journal entries.
  • Review and advise on all finance systems, changes and upgrades.
  • Review annually the 403B ER Contribution and incentive pay.
  • Responsible for creating and implementing systems to establish internal controls and procedures.
  • Performs periodic review of all general ledger entries including payroll.
  • Responsible for the review and preparation of external audit documents.
  • Responsible for the annual financial audit and cost report process.
  • Responsible for the accuracy of the payroll accounting process.
  • Responsible for training and evaluating the performance of personnel in the Finance Department; recommends training requirements ensuring the staff is at the highest level of skill necessary to meet organizational needs.
  • Responsible for accounting and payroll compliance issue research and resolution.
  • In the absence of the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (EVP CFO), provides management and leadership for the Finance Department.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • A strategic perspective and financial management experience, appropriate to oversight of a complex institution.
  • Proven leadership ability, with a broad array of skills transferable to a complex, human services organization. Experience in close collaborations with operations and program officers.
  • Highly developed communication skills, and especially exceptional listening skills-enabling this person to articulate a complicated and emotional subject, to project an image of care and responsibility; to inspire confidence and trust; to influence opinion and policy. Ability to communicate with key stakeholders in a professional manner and make presentations before the Board.
  • Ability to work closely, in partnership, and in a position of leadership with a diversified staff, in a style of respect and collaboration. A natural motivator and mentor.
  • Ability to identify and recruit able staff, and to motivate, develop, and inspire an effective professional and volunteer workforce. Expects and inspires high level performance.
  • Ability to make informed decisions, and to implement such decisions with attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Passion for the work, compassion for donors and their families, high energy, durability, a healthy sense of humor and perspective, and the ability to maintain a healthy, gratifying, congenial environment for staff.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred in Accounting or Finance or related field. 10 years of relevant experience may be substituted for educational requirements.
  • Has comprehensive knowledge of GAAP, state and federal regulations including labor laws.
  • Minimum of 5 years relevant accounting and payroll experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years in a supervisory role.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office, and accounting software, Intacct and UKG preferred.
  • Healthcare experience preferred.
